Patrol Division : K9 Unit

The Groton Town Police Department K9 Unit is currently comprised of three patrol officer/canine handlers, their assigned canine partners and several other police officers that assist the canine unit as decoys during the canine unit's ongoing in-service training. Each canine team is assigned to work one of three daily eight-hour patrol shifts. The unit canines are selected from an eastern European German Shepherd breed that is imported into the United States from Hungary. All of the unit's canines are certified for their assigned police patrol duties in the areas of suspect apprehension, handler protection, tracking, and several different methods of search. Additionally, all of the department's canines are cross-trained in the detection of many of the most prevalent illegal narcotics officers commonly encounter on the street.
