Staff in this division is responsible for the management of approximately 33,000 tons of solid waste disposal generated within the Town.
Staff operates a leaf composting facility, a residential transfer station, and a commercial solid waste collection program. Additional
responsibilities include the maintenance of three closed landfills, transportation of construction and demolition wastes generated at the
transfer station to an out-of-state Subtitle D landfill, and the grinding of brush into reusable mulch.
Through a municipal service agreement with the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Resource Recovery Authority, the Town is required to
dispose of all municipal solid waste at the waste-to-energy facility in Preston. Private haulers are assessed fees based on the number of
tons of material disposed of at the facility and billed accordingly.
Currently, the Town is exceeding its minimum commitment of waste at the Preston facility. If the current rate of growth continues, the
Town, as a member of the regional authority, will be looking to export surplus municipal solid waste to out-of-state facilities within the
next couple of years.
